If you have an individual account, you can upgrade to 1Password Families or 1Password Teams: Sign in to your account on 1Password.com and click Invite People in the sidebar. If your family or team member can't unlock 1Password after recovery is completed, they can start over to sign in again. To redeem your free membership, link your family account to your business account. Only your subscription status will be linked. No other information is shared.
Redeem your free 1Password Families membership
To redeem your free 1Password Families membership:
- Sign in to your business account.
- Click your name in the top right and choose My Profile.
- In the Free 1Password Families Membership section, click Redeem Now.
To sign up for 1Password Families and redeem your free membership, click Sign Up.
To apply your free membership to an existing account, click 'Apply to existing account'. Then sign in to your family account and click Apply. If you sign in to an individual account, you'll be asked if you want to convert it to a family account.
Your 1Password Families membership will remain active as long as it's linked to your business account. If you're preparing to leave your team, you can unlink your family account and add a payment method to keep using it.

If your family account becomes frozen, make sure that:
- you see your linked family on My Profile in your business account
- your team has an active subscription to 1Password Business
If you leave your business account or are removed from it, your family account will be unlinked from it and become frozen. You can add a payment method to start a 1Password Families subscription.

Linked family accounts share only their subscription status with a business account. Ownership and access rights aren't shared. A linked family account belongs to the family organizer, and the business can't access or manage it.

You can restore access for a family or team member if they forget their Master Password or can't find their Secret Key.When you recover an account for someone:
- They'll receive a new Secret Key and create a new Master Password.
- They'll be able to access all the data they had before.
- They'll need to sign in again on all their devices once recovery is complete.
You can recover accounts for other people if:
- you're a family organizer
- you're a team administrator or owner
- you belong to a group that has the 'Recover Accounts' permission
You can't recover your own account, so make sure at least two family or team members can recover accounts. That way, if you can't sign in, someone will be able to help you. Learn how to add a family organizer or implement a recovery plan for your team.
Begin recovery
You can recover an account for someone at any time. Just keep in mind that after they create a new Master Password, they won't be able to access their account until you complete the recovery.
1password Sign In
To begin recovery:
- Sign in to your account on 1Password.com.
- Click People in the sidebar.
- Click the name of a person, then click Begin Recovery below the person's name.
The person whose account you're recovering will get an email from 1Password. When they click 'Recover my account' in the email, a page will open in their browser. Then they'll get a new Secret Key and create a new Master Password.
Complete recovery
After your family or team member has created their new Master Password, you'll be notified by email that a recovery is awaiting completion. Click 'Complete account recovery' in the email. A page will open in your browser with the person's details. Click Complete Recovery, then they'll need to:

- Click the filter to the right of the search field and choose Recovery Pending.
